Start and Improve Your Business

`Download the PPt version of quick Information`

The SIYB program is a system of inter-related training packages and supporting materials for small-scale entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses. It aims at increasing the viability of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through management principles suitable for the environment of developing countries. The ILO assists Business Development Service (BDS) organizations to develop the skills required to implement, monitor, manage and finance the training program, and sets up a sustainable training system at the national level, thus contributing to sustainable economic growth and employment generation.

How did SIYB come about?

The SIYB program originated from a management training package called “Look After Your Firm” which was developed in the late 1970s by the Swedish Employers Federation for local small and medium entrepreneurs. In 1977, the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) funded a project for the ILO to adopt the materials to reflect the needs and situations of entrepreneurs in developing countries. The adapted training package was called the “Improve Your Business” (IYB) program. In the early 1990s, an ILO technical cooperation project in Fiji developed the “Start Your Business” (SYB) training package addressing potential start-ups. The program, after an initial development stage, quickly spread around the world. The product range grew as the “Generate Your Business Idea” (GYB) package was developed. All of these training packages use the “SIYB Business Game” as a key motivational and learning tool that simulates a real-life business situation. As all the programs had a similar design, in the late 1990s the ILO decided to group the GYB, SYB, and IYB training packages and associated management tools within a common framework, calling it the “Start and Improve Your Business” (SIYB) program. In the early 2000s, the ILO developed the next generation of training modules and interventions for growing small enterprises called “Expand your Business” (EYB) and this also became part of the SIYB program.

Training of Trainers (ToT)

Become an International Certified Business Trainer

With the labor force increasing by over 400,000 each year, Afghanistan has an increasing need to generate employment opportunities for its new labor market entrants, along with those individuals who are already unemployed or underemployed. Promoting entrepreneurship could help spur job growth and increase the demand for skilled workers. Therefore it is important to train the “entrepreneur enablers” to effectively support young people to implement business start-ups and support small enterprises to grow. Recent research shows that the majority of jobs in the world are provided by Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and that in low-income countries this share is almost 80%. However, these entrepreneurs often face a number of challenges that prevent them from reaching their potential: Strengthening markets for business development services (BDS) is increasingly viewed as a key strategy for enabling small enterprises to obtain the business services they need and want in a sustainable manner.

The International Labour Office (ILO) has designed and tested responses to these challenges. Programs like the ILO’s Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) have demonstrated promising results in addressing both the demand and supply of business services for small enterprises. Since its inception, the SIYB package has been used in over 100 countries and has reached more than 15 million end-beneficiaries and created more than 9 million jobs in the last ten years. Today, the program is one of the largest of its kind, with a network of over 65,000 SIYB trainers worldwide.

SIYB – Start and Improve Your Business is one of the largest global business management training programs. It helps small-scale entrepreneurs to start and grow their business, as a strategy to create more and better employment for women and men. SIYB trainers play a key role in SIYB implementation as they are responsible for training entrepreneurs – starting from understanding their training needs to post-training follow up support provision. The objective of this workshop is to enable SIYB training providers to develop long-term business models that will allow them to function independently financially while still maintaining service quality standards that facilitate entrepreneurial development. Sell More For More

The Sell More For More™ program helps farmers earn more income by improving post-harvest handling practices and expanding marketing activities. The approach works through farmer-based organizations (FBO), ranging from informal groups to formal cooperatives. The name of the program articulates the outcomes of the program: Sell More product by increasing quantity For More revenue by increasing quality

The tool strengthens the post-harvest handling abilities of individual farmers while simultaneously improving an FBO management team’s ability to create and execute market-oriented business plans. This dual approach reduces individual and collective risk to farmers by empowering them to pursue specific market opportunities and fulfill buyer requirements

The program improves the ability of farmer organizations to meet the quality and quantity specifications of the most stringent buyers. This program originated from a collaboration between the World Food Program (WFP) and USAID. In Rwanda, Sell More For More™ cooperatives successfully sold their maize to the WFP at an 80 percent acceptance rate, compared to 47 percent for other suppliers. These cooperatives outperform their comparison group in overall quality measurements as well. Prior to Sell More For More™, members reported a 46 percent average use of all best practices. After Sell More For More training, that figure jumped to 87 percent.

Sell More For More™ consists of seven components. Postharvest handling and storage sessions demonstrate proper cleaning, sorting and storage techniques to ensure high quality and minimize loss. Leadership, marketing, recordkeeping and operations trainings are delivered as a series of participatory workshops for current and emerging cooperative leaders. These workshops culminate in a business and marketing plan. The seventh and final session, credit, is a one-on-one consultation to provide an in-depth review of the cooperative’s financial needs

FBOs completing the program are encouraged to form a chamber or association to pursue shared services, strengthen marketing activities, improve procurement leveraging, provide learning for nascent organizations and advocate on behalf of their collective members. In this way, Sell More For More™ strives to build a sustainable program that continues to serve the needs of farmer organizations and households with expanded social and economic opportunities

Farming as a Business

Farming as a Business (FAAB) is an extension approach to working with farmer groups during agricultural interventions. It is a form of private-sector development to sustainably increase the profits of low-income, smallholder farmers. It involves technical and institutional capacity building.

Uses:

The FAAB approach aims to increase the technical capacity of farmers groups, in addition to contributing to an enabling environment allowing them greater market engagement. The ultimate objective of the approach is sustainably increasing incomes of smallholder farmers by increasing productivity, decreasing the risk of market engagement, and restoring the environmental resource base.

Tool Components:

The FAAB Extension Tool explains all relevant components of the FAAB approach, and provides an extensive list of annexes that further explain the approach and examples of data collection tools in English and Nepali. The primary technical components of the tool are:

  • Strategic Alignment and Mobilization
  • Technical Capacity Building
  • Institutional Capacity Building
  • Annexes: examples and formats of necessary forms and tools

Operations

Number of Staff Required:

The FAAB approach does not specify any requirements for additional staff.

Time:

FAAB is an approach to programming; the time required is the duration of the agricultural intervention.

Cost of Assessment:

Not specified; the additional costs will be associated with value chain analyses and capacity-building efforts.

Training:

Not specified, but it is likely that staff leading the FAAB intervention would need prior experience in value chain analysis and capacity building.

Geographic Targeting:

Will be determined by the agricultural project objective and the ‘high-impact commodity’ selected in the initial stage of the FAAB intervention.

Type of Data Collection:

A variety of information is required to properly employ the FAAB approach, including typical farming practices in the target area, crops cultivated, market supply and demand, prices and trends, communication networks, and agricultural extension services. This information is collected through focus group discussions, interviews, and stakeholder meetings.

Degree of Technical Difficulty:

Staff involved in the FAAB approach need a number of different skills, including agricultural extension, commercialization, market analysis and capacity building. It is likely that staff will need training beyond the scope of the FAAB Extension Tool.

Complements other Resources:

FAAB includes a strong component on integration with markets that a stand-alone market analysis might feed into. Conversely, the market analysis conducted by FAAB could be used for other interventions. The FAAB approach could benefit from techniques of gender-focused approaches to ensure full inclusion of female farmers.

Introductory Food Safety

The Introductory Food Safety training is for all men and women involve in food safety processing from the post-harvest handling to final product in order to gain an understanding the employee’s impact of the safety of everyone’s food. They could have a very negative impact on people’s lives by simply not washing their hands before they start their shift.

Food safety training is an essential component of every food business in ensuring a food safety culture. It is a legal requirement that staff involved in a food environment are adequately trained and/or supervised commensurate with their work activity. The responsibility for training and supervision of staff lies clearly with the proprietor of every food business. This is the case for all staff whether they are part-time, full-time or casual, or whether they are employed in the public or private sector.

There is no excuse for employers in this area to ignore the law. The Food Safety Authority responsibility is to ensure that staff from the farm gate to point of sale are trained in compliance with legislation. The Authority also has a role in fostering the establishment and maintenance of high standards of food hygiene. The Authority is setting training standards, which must be demonstrated at various stages of employment in order to produce safe food in accordance with current legislation and in line with best practice. Training standards will be incorporated into the service contracts with our official agents and in turn they will be used by the enforcement officers during inspections to ascertain the level of training in place and industry’s compliance with legislation.

The training standards are outlined in a series of guides. Each guide is produced in consultation with the FSAI’s Food Safety Training Council. The guide is intended to be a user-friendly guide for employers on training of staff in food safety and will also be used by enforcement officers when assessing food safety training in the workplace. To assist the employer, the guide also outlines the activities which are necessary to support the training and which allow the employee demonstrate best practice. This Food Safety Training Standard - Level One outlines the training which must be demonstrated at the induction stage of employment. Induction level training has been broken down into two stages; stage one which must be completed before the employee commences work and stage two which must be completed within the first month of employment.

This is a generic guide in that it applies to three sectors of the industry, namely manufacturing, retail and food service. Food safety training is the key to food safety. It does not have to be certified. Training is only effective when the training standards are being demonstrated in the food operation. It is imperative that the food industry through the use of these standards, ensures that effective training is an on-going activity in their business.

Packages are

  1. Introduction to Food Safety.
  2. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points - HACCP
  3. Hygiene and Sanitation
  4. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health - COSHH
